Erin Wade, who struck a chord with Santa Fe and Albuquerque restaurant-goers with her Vinaigrette restaurants in each city, is opening a throwback general store in the City Different, according to a report in the Santa Fe New Mexican.

Modern General, which had a soft opening on Monday, stocks hardware and groceries and operates a small cafe. The store’s slogan is “Nothing you don’t need.”

Modern General is located at Don Cubero Alley and Cerrillos Road, in an open, remodeled space with big windows, wood floors and open shelving. Items for sale were selected by Wade, who made her choices based on stuff she uses day to day. You will find hammers, dish soap, brown rice and milk, to name just a few items. The cafe serves coffee and smoothies, as well as a minimalist breakfast and lunch menu.

“I hate running errands,” Wade said. “Why can’t that experience be joyful and elevating? You can get a juice and sit down and check your email and pick up odds and ends that you need.”
